Gooney Chick
Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge
In June 2002, I moved to Midway Atoll which is 1,200 miles west of Hawaii. Midway Atoll is best known for "The Battle of Midway" which happened in 1942. No longer a Naval base, Midway is now a national wildlife refuge with over a million Laysan albatross, more commonly called "gooney birds." There are also spinner dolphins, monk seals, green sea turtles, and many different kinds of birds.
